Get Better Sleep

In the US 60 million people have insomnia!

It’s estimated that over 30% of Americans experience insomnia or poor sleep patterns, and 60 million people in a given year experience insomnia.

The implications of this are serious since poor sleep is responsible for a myriad of health problems; not the least of which is acceleration of the aging process. Premature aging speeds the development of most degenerative diseases including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s among others.

Simply stated, poor sleep habits pose serious threats to our health. Getting a good night sleep on a regular basis can prevent and even reverse the disease process.

Here are some sleep killers:

Reasons for insomnia are many and varied. However the majority boil down to lifestyle choices.

  • What does our diet look like, and when do we eat?
  • Are we overindulging in caffeine and sugar?
  • How about alcohol?
  • Is our food properly digested before we go to bed?
  • How do we manage stress?
  • Do we get enough exercise including stretching, yoga and meditation?

This one may surprise you:

  • Light! Too much artificial light and especially the electromagnetic frequencies (blue light) from computer screens, I-pads, television, cell phones. This type of light suppresses the body’s ability to manufacture melatonin, the hormone which regulates our wake sleep cycles.
